Fluctuating Hypoxemia and Pulmonary Shunting Following Fatal Head Trauma

A Case Report

NATHAN LEON PACE, MD*

Department of Anesthesiology and the Anesthesia Research Center, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington.

Abstract

A case of severe hypoxemia and pulmonary shunting following head injury is reported. The rapid alterations in pulmonary shunting and arterial oxygenation are unexplained and probably contributed to the patient's demise. Better understanding of this respiratory failure awaits more sophisticated monitoring methods.
